Donald Trump’s performance at the Helsinki summit press
conference is the lowest of all of his low points. He made it clear to the
world that he is arrogant, unprepared, easily manipulated, undiplomatic, can’t
see a world beyond himself and will sell his country short.
To this date, for all the criticism he and his cronies have
gotten, for all the jokes he has been the butt of, for the misjudgments he has
made, the Republicans cowered behind him and many followers have continued to
follow him.
So what can we do? We all know a Trump supporter among our
friends, family, colleagues. My belief is that we give up partisan and divisive
arguments, and each approach one Trump supporter by listening, being patient
and persisting with calm arguments that consistently show how everybody’s
America, and its institutions, are being weakened and degraded. I’m working on
one such family member myself.
