David Brooks’ editorial in yesterday’s NY Times talked about
localism. This is a movement that believes that problems can be solved best
from the bottom up rather than by following national pundits, think tanks and
voices from the Ivy League. Local individuals, organizations and government act
to solve local problems.
This struck a chord with me regarding the visual arts in
Cincinnati. Though there are numerous galleries and other venues that support
local artists, local government and local media are grossly delinquent in
recognizing the value of the work of local artists, not only in quality but also
in the contributions to the cultural life of the city. City grants to artists
have dried up. To read the Enquirer or watch the TV news, you could imagine that
a serious art community doesn’t exist.
Visual art is alive and healthy in Cincinnati, and it should
be recognized and valued.
