Father art

It’s reasonable and common that artists maintain an attachment to their works. After all, they are documents of autobiography, self-discovery, imagination, engagement with the world and aesthetic pleasure.


But artists cannot be the mothers of their works, the unconditional lovers of what they create. They must the fathers, who demand discipline and effort, who give criticism and who prepare the work to be tested in the real world.
