Saints are not the 2-dimensionally good characters we often
assume them to be. They are the ones who needed to be knocked off their horses,
who have wrestled with the devil, who understood evil before they understood
good.
They are the ones who have forgiveness of the tough kind in
their toolboxes and use it first on themselves. Their humility makes judgment
impossible and love always available. They have little time for the trivial.
They know that to be fully human, each has to confront and
embrace the dualities that occupy body, mind and spirit.
