Once again, at this time of year, the irrationally grumpy
old man emerges. Why? It’s the beginning of the awards season for performances
on stage and screen. We ordinary folk are busy at our jobs of public service,
doing them with commitment and excellence, little recognition and modest
salaries. We are meeting civic needs, teaching children, securing the country,
maybe even risking our lives.
Meanwhile, entertainment celebrities are showering one
another with praise and awards in ceremony after ceremony. Elaborate staging,
endless thank you’s, couture designed for shock and envy, red carpet chit-chat,
rented jewels dripping off ears and chests, gift bags worth thousands and
sumptuous after parties—all for our viewing pleasure, their hyped up PR and
box-office dollars pouring in.
Tis the season of entertainment excess.
