To the committed Catholic, Lent is a time rich in symbolism
and ritual. But we are living in a time
of waning church attendance and of the loss of understanding of the meaning of
ritual. As one who has found it fruitful to seek a more meaningful spiritual
journey outside of institutionalized religion, the power of the Lenten rituals
still resonates.
The narrative of the God/Goddess who sacrifices him/herself
for mankind is a common element of mythology as are rituals of self-sacrifice,
humility, fasting and spiritual awareness. The single God event is repeated
cyclically, so that the origin event becomes not a free pass, but a chance
again to reach and live more fully on the spiritual plane of humanity.
