Democracy

We’re frequently reminded of the freedoms guaranteed to us by the US Constitution—speech, assembly, press, religion and so forth. But we are not as frequently reminded that these freedoms must be earned, continually. It’s not just voting, it’s being an informed, intelligent and conscientious voter. We no longer expect to have competence and integrity in candidates. We no longer expect them to be knowledgeable and to educate us. Thus, they dupe us with media tricks and half-truths and fingers pointed at their opponents.

The Pledge of Allegiance is now old-fashioned, and patriotism requires nothing more than some prancing and yelling in costume. Democracy is only as strong as us, us individually taking our responsibilities seriously and making the effort to do the right thing.
