Imagine that all the churches in the city suddenly disappeared. We are left with boxes, boxes for living, boxes for small business, boxes for big business. Some are modest and practical, some are adorned for attention, some soar upward in glass and steel. But in the end, they are all boxes.
Now let the churches return. All of a sudden, there are spires, aspiring to something other than comfort and wealth. Inside is quiet and contemplation instead of busy business. Even if churches are more and more empty, they still stand for a part of ourselves that has always needed to aspire.
