We love young love, innocent love, first love. We love the
passionate, against-all-odds romance of it. It’s the time when libidos are
strongest, and when the journey to adulthood is just beginning. It’s an
experience we almost never forget.
We call this “falling in love.” As Erich Fromm points out,
when we are falling, we have no control. We don’t know how and where we will
land. We’re too busy enjoying the ride. We want this to last forever. But it
won’t, and it’s a danger to expect it to.
Rather we should be building a mature love, a love that
reaches beyond. When there are quarrels, misunderstandings, failures and
trespasses, a love that reaches beyond pulls them into its healing presence.
It’s not always easy to build such a love, and sometimes even such a love can’t
heal.
But still, aim for a love that reaches beyond.
