Torn by bullets

Torn by bullets, a leg bleeding in the sand.
Dead in her mother’s arms.
A soccer game in a dusty street.
No clean water in the refugee camp.
Cowering in a tiny room.
Raped by a soldier.
Buried under rubble.
Bloated from malnutrition.
No medicine for malaria.
A house made of tin and cardboard.
Dying in a crowded hospital.
Parents both dead.

These are just some of the circumstances of the world’s children. Money piles up in the bank accounts of the wealthy few. Celebrities visit distressed sites, drop a little money and fly home to comfort. The press gloms onto the celebrities and gives little attention to the dedicated day-to-day work of the caregivers. Harry and Megan will visit villages, interact with poor families, fund raise, get lots of media attention and then go home and complain about media intrusion in their lives.

Is this what the media really believe we want and need to hear? Why do we need celebrities to tell us what we know we need to do? Where is conscience?
