“Everything is art” is one way to look at it. It’s
egalitarian, and brings everyone into the community of art. With awareness and
education there is the potential for more people to value and participate in
art.
Another way to look at it is that art is not art when an
artist makes it. It is simply a contender. It must prove itself by its
persistence, its cultural stance, its relevance to the attentive viewer and its
ability to fight for meaning time and time again.
In the first instance art is instantly art. In the other, some
artists never know their work becomes art. Others can only hope and keep at it.
Time is a difficult taskmaster, but if there is meaning to be continually unearthed
in the work, it will earn its name of “art.”
