When I watch interviews of politicians in the rotunda of the
U.S. Capitol, I think of the architects, designers, painters, sculptors and
craftsmen who put in committed and passionate hours of work to make the space
the physical and symbolic place it is for Americans.
And then I think of the kind of the politics practiced there
these days. There is little beauty, the passion is destructively partisan and
the craft of politics is based on spin, deception and half-truths.
Perhaps one day politics will have the gravity of the marble
columns and the majesty of the dome.
