Artists are in the middle of things, though they are often
found on the periphery of social and intellectual norms. They make material
things, but are typically not very materialistic. They are not media often darlings,
so don’t often have the exposure given to pop culture celebrities. They thus
seem hidden, so they don’t seem particularly useful to most people.
But artists take on our dreams, fears, anxieties, and social
failings and help us see them for what they are. They own up to them, and they
help us see the way to a better self and a better world.
