It is sometimes said that we are the boss of those we elect.
But bosses have the capacity to evaluate and quickly fire workers who are not
doing their jobs. They can give direct feedback and expect direct results.
But we are only one boss among thousands or millions. We
have to organize to do anything. We have to wait years for a chance at making
change happen. Giving feedback through calls and emails never guarantees we got
through. It’s time consuming and expensive to have a one-on-one meeting. And we
have to stand in line behind donors and lobbyists.
When all is said and done, the reasons for dissatisfaction
are forgotten or washed away by PR and marketing. The day they walk in the
door, they have the best health care and a life pension. We expect results, and
we get ideology.
