Nowadays spectacle is the thing. And ego. And celebrity. And
the big marketing pitch. And popularity. You get it.
I think, though, that the goal of the artist should be
humility and generosity. These are tough virtues and not easy to achieve. But
humility demands attentive listening and the belief that there is more that can
be learned from anyone. Generosity says that art is not for the artist, but for
the viewer. Art is not only to reveal a fire in the artist, but also to light a
fire in the viewer.
