The Catholic doctrine of original sin never made sense to
me. Maybe I got it wrong, but laying sinfulness on an innocent newborn seemed
to go a bit far. It does make human sense though that any child born into a
human family and culture is born into the potential for good or evil.
Baptism is a helpful, even sacred, ritual, which is really more
for the parents and godparents than for the child. For it asks them to commit
to the sacred duty of preparing the child for the difficult task of living the good.
Sin is not washed away, but love becomes a shield.
