In America, contemporary art is often thought of as elitist.
But to me, elitism is tied to money, taste and status. This is often reinforced
by fashion--especially high fashion--and style, which by its nature is impermanent.
When fashion and style—even in art--become driven by marketing, the goal
becomes the seduction of consumers, offering the illusion of status and worth.
This confusion gets clarified when we recognize that
contemporary art is not elitist, but rather an activity, which is, by its
nature, high-minded. High minded art opens eyes, digs into humanity, remakes
culture, wants truth.
Look at contemporary art this way and see what happens.
