Circumstances like the treatment of immigrants at the
border, gun deaths of African Americans and large numbers of drug overdoses all
pierce the heart in a deep and direct way. But it’s the rational mind solves
those problems by recognizing their complexity and navigating the way to a
workable solution. No such problems are solved without heart and mind working
together, hearts demanding a solution and minds working toward it.
The news is good at reporting the heart issues. They’re
compelling, immediate and enticing viewing. The hard, slow work of problem
solving is tedious and isn’t sexy. So we don’t get the same kind of coverage of
it. We get incessant coverage, for example, of what Kamala Harris said to Joe
Biden at the debates and his reactions. But what do we hear of their policies
and contemporary legislative records that actually try to solve problems?
Surely not enough.
