Very few are able to sustain a life as a serious and
committed artist. The discipline, sacrifices, self-questioning, persistent
demands of creativity and tough skin needed are a lot to handle. No rewards are
guaranteed, and the belief in yourself is essential.
Time and making are tests of resolve. Artists can lose focus
but retain their creativity. Some support others in becoming artists. Some find
other careers in which they can be creative. Some fall off the edge of the
earth. A genuine search for a place in art can lead to any number of life places.
So it’s important for each artist to not get lost in what
they should do, but in what their life and needs call them to do. Whether you
are a master or a teacher or a lover of art--or any or all of them--you have to
come to a belief in yourself and where your own life experience and self-knowledge
are leading you.
