How I critique art:
Spend time listening to the art.
My vision and my aesthetic as an artist must be set aside.
This isn’t easy, and I don’t always achieve it, but I try earnestly.
The artist’s intention must be discussed.
If the artist doesn’t identify the criteria by which the
work should be considered, I must make the effort to discover them.
Unless technical and formal elements are the intent of the
piece, they should be discussed in terms of how they advance intent and meaning
in the piece.
Meaning should be discussed as a fluid concept in relation
to an audience.
Consideration of where the piece can lead is perhaps more
important than where the piece is now.
