When media report on the drug problem in America, they report on the danger, the cartels, the death toll, rehab programs, law enforcement efforts, new dangerous drugs, social costs and treatments. But one thing we hear little about is why, when there is so much information available on the dangers, people choose drugs.
The choice of users to use is what empowers the dealers and cartels. Why make such choices? What is it about our society that creates such drug use? What kinds of life circumstances lead to drug use? Nancy Reagan coined the phrase: Just say no. Why doesn’t that work? Why can’t forces in society support “Just say no.”Can solving the problem of drug use be any harder than fighting this problem?
