We want love to be the defining force of the world. We sing love songs and write poems and stories of love. We try our best to love one another. But why doesn’t this work more often?
The answer is that love struggles in a world of hierarchies, castes, class and power. These social constructs are designed so that some people can use and control other people. But love requires respect for the dignity of others.
Many powerful stories of love are stories of love across ethnicities, races, social classes and nationalities. These stories often end in tragedy, demonstrating how difficult it is to bridge these divides.
