God of Decency

From the time that Donald Trump descended the escalator on his way to the Presidency, I think the God of Decency has gone on sabbatical and left America in the hands of a brigade of reveling satans.

We have become a nation of meanness, anger and violence, too lacking in compassion and too driven by fear. America has lost its place and its respect as world leader. More nations are closer to becoming nuclear powers. We are wildly in debt in an unstable economy. We lead the world in COVID deaths. We practice selfish freedoms and call it patriotism. We cower in the me-world of Donald Trump.
Government seems impotent and corrupt. We fear socialism while the government shows every sign of authoritarian rule. Every issue is a black-and-white conflict, a tug of war, and politics and media feed off of this. Meanwhile, ordinary citizens just trying to get by are exhausted and hang onto easy lies that comfort them.
The death of RBG and the imminent appointment of another Trump Supreme Court justice is one more sign that the God of Decency has turned his back on America. It’s left to us who want a decent and compassionate America to subdue the satans.

Would you rather

Would you rather die by drowning or hanging? That’s how many voters in 2020 in America feel.

We live in the most technically advanced and wealthy nation in the world. Yet we are under leadership that has failed to control COVID. People are motivated by fear instead of hope. Racial and economic problems are not solved but are magnified to create division.

We have been trained to fear. To arm ourselves with guns and ignorance. To put our security in the hands of authoritarianism. To turn our backs on justice and equality. To close ranks.

But hope is not about dying, but living. It’s about action. It’s about working for the kind of world that we want for our children and their children

Trump voters

Think of the person you admire most in the world. What are the aspects of this person’s character? Now do the same for Donald Trump. What does this mean for you?

I think it’s very possible that Hillary Clinton’s “basket of deplorables” are those voters who tipped the balance for Trump in 2016. And this may happen again if those same voters don’t have their concerns acknowledged. While the legitimacy of these concerns may be arguable, they drive a mass of voters.

Trump voters must realize that the fear of socialism is not nearly as dangerous as Trump’s consistent drive to authoritarianism, with behaviors that reflect those of Putin and Kim. Trump voters must realize that the swamp has not been drained but filled with corrupt and unqualified officials. Trump supporters must open their eyes to the swelling numbers of former Trump followers who are now critics.

Trump voters must acknowledge that the border wall has not even come close to being built and immigration has not been solved. Trump voters must realize that what’s happening in the streets of America is happening on Trump’s watch with nothing but talk by him as a remedy.

Trump voters must ask themselves if, under Donald Trump and a Republican majority in the Senate, America is really great again in the economy, in the streets, in our homes and on the world stage.

Patriotism, law and order, American values, privilege, racism, economic inequality—the list goes on—are issues that must be addressed, but not by rigid adherence to issues which can only be resolved by thoughtful consideration and hard work.

Testing

Teachers, students and parents complain about the excessive time and effort necessary for students to pass the mathematics, science, social science and writing tests for graduation.

For my money their regular classroom education should provide them with that knowledge. Then they would have time to prepare for tests in decency, integrity, honesty and citizenship.

Love as a force

We want love to be the defining force of the world. We sing love songs and write poems and stories of love. We try our best to love one another. But why doesn’t this work more often?

The answer is that love struggles in a world of hierarchies, castes, class and power. These social constructs are designed so that some people can use and control other people. But love requires respect for the dignity of others.

Many powerful stories of love are stories of love across ethnicities, races, social classes and nationalities. These stories often end in tragedy, demonstrating how difficult it is to bridge these divides.

Sacred

We’re not angels. We don’t have wings. We are just humans stuck mucking around in our own human messes.  We want to bring light and hope to the anger, hate, brutality, violence and greed that are of our own making. We know that it is up to us to do something.

It was essential to the life of many indigenous cultures to see the world as sacred, to live and act in a way that showed reverence for what was around them. It was important to their survival. For modern civilizations the idea of a sacred world can seem old-fashioned or even ridiculous.

But look at the world we live in now. Look at how we treat one another and our environment. Look at the consequences of decision-making based on a material vision of the world. Look at a world economically, socially and spiritually out of balance and harmony.

Take a little time to really stand in awe of the created world. Take a little time to imagine your actions in a world you saw as sacred.

Happy Labor Day

Today is Labor Day. Today we remember those who built the pyramids and the Great Wall of China and the magnificent Gothic cathedrals of Europe. Those who tilled the fields as serfs and picked the cotton and harvested the fruit while they lived in shacks and were ripped off by the company store. Those who worked in the mines and steel factories. Those who worked as child laborers and worked endless hours in sweat shops. Those who were beaten by hired thugs just because they wanted fair working conditions. Those who still work at minimum wage and barely feed their families. Those who work multiple jobs to keep their families above water. Those who still work diligently even as wealth pours into the coffers of the rich.

Happy Labor Day.

Overheard

Overheard on the streets of America

“With this corona crap, I can’t party. I can’t get drunk. I can’t get all the sex I want. I can’t go to football games. What is my tuition good for anyway.”

“Black lives matter. All lives matter. White lives matter. That’s why I moved into a gated community.”

“Donald Trump is a lying, cheating, narcissistic, bully. But Joe Biden is a Catholic, so as a fundamentalist Christian I have no choice but to support Trump.”

“Me and my girlfriends thought the Republican Convention was great. So many women speakers. And their clothes and heels were so beautiful. I loved their hair and makeup too.”

“I’ve seen them on TV, and some of them are good actors. But I had never seen one on my street. I felt a little anxious until I checked to make sure my gun was loaded.”

“I’m free to not wear a mask. If I go into a bar, people are free to get out of my way. This is America, and there’s plenty room for everybody.”

“I’m not sending in my ballot by mail. I hear they have special X-ray scanners that can check your ballot to see if it’s Republican or Democrat. And the scanners are made by Louis DeJoy’s company”

“I heard from a QAnon friend that Donald Trump is the secret messiah, and that when the end of the world comes, all believers will own a golf course and have a trophy wife.”

Some people

Some people sleep with hate under their pillows.

Some people carry a backpack filled with hate.

Some people feed hate to others as a poison.

Some people use hate as a bludgeon.

Some people can never scream away their hate.

Some people use hate to hide their fear.

Some people coat their hate in a veneer of pleasantness.

Some people hate without admitting they hate.

Some people would be empty without hate.

Some people hate for a living.

Some people sleep with love under their pillows.

Some people carry a backpack filed with love.

Some people feed love to others as sustenance.

Some people use love as a blanket.

Some people can never stop the flow of their love.

Some people use love to conquer their fear.

Some people never cover up their love.

Some people love with humility.

Some people will never feel empty because they love.

Some people love as a calling.

I'm an artist

 I’m an artist.

So what does that mean?

It means that creativity is unrelenting…even in the little daily things.

It means that I’m curious and passionate…even obnoxious about it.

It means that I experiment, I fail, I learn, I question, I offer…even again and again.

It means that I find beauty in the world… and I want to celebrate that.

It means that I have a vision that I believe in…even if it’s “weird shit.”

It means that art reminds me that I’m human…and I want to share that.

It means that I want to have a conversation with you…if you have some time.

Love past it all

I think it’s time to move past the approaches we have been taking to racism and ethnic and religious discrimination. We speak out when one race hates another or one religion hates another or one ethnicity hates another.

But some whites hate other whites. Some blacks hate other blacks. You see my point. The focus becomes on the hate that divides us more than on the means of healing those divides.

Since the root of all of these problems is in the individual, the healing must come through each individual. How do we become successful loving people? How do we become compassionate and courageous lovers? How do we become the kind of individuals whose love is so powerful that hate and discrimination are no longer useful to us?

This kind of love does not just happen. It takes education, nurturing, practice, example and commitment. As a culture, we believe we just stumble into love, and there it is. No. It must be something a culture wants and is willing to commit to fully. This is thinking beyond hate and racism to the only genuine solution.

Two quick poems

 Two quick poems

I offer you an authentic piece of me

You offer me an authentic piece of you

This is the first step to saying we are human

I seek more authentic parts of you

You seek more authentic parts of me.

This is the first step to being in each other’s lives

I take some of your pain away

You take some of my pain away

This is the first step to showing we are one another

I say “I love you” and I really mean it

You say “I love you” and you really mean it

This is oneness pure and simple.

Nothing lasts forever

But some things linger

Everything must die

But we can invent heaven

Memories will fade

But they turn into dreams

The universe has not decided

But maybe our atoms will recall

Human beings

Human beings killed a human being in the street.

Human beings marched peacefully to protest the death.

Human beings equipped themselves into a wall.

Human beings faced off over the killing.

Human beings provoked one another to violence.

Human beings used their smart phones and made videos to report the events.

Human beings weighed in on the events without all the facts.

Human beings took sides and argued and argued.

Human beings looted and burned their neighborhoods.

Human beings politicized the situation.

Human beings proceeded with the processes of justice.

Human beings had trouble forgetting.

Human beings being human beings.

Trump message

Mexicans are rapists.

Only I can solve the problem.

Punch him.

Some women are pigs.

Roger Stone is a good man.

Putin and I are good friends.

People have said I’m the Messiah.

Grab ‘em by the pussy.

It’s good. Very good.

It’s bad. Very bad.

I’ve done more for blacks than any President.

This is a hoax.

This is a witc hunt.

My crowds were the biggest ever.

If I were younger, I’d date Ivanka.

I’m Donald Trump, and I approve this message.
