We all make judgments about art. It’s natural and inevitable. Some judgments are better informed than others, but they are judgments nevertheless. The art doesn’t mind because it has its own job to do. It has to prove itself to be art over and over again over time. It’s what Walter Darby Bannard calls “art becoming art.”
To make satisfying judgments about art, this is what I believe is necessary:
1. Look at as much art as you can of all kinds and with an open mind.
2. Connect the art and the artist as often as possible.
3. Expect to grow and to be wiling to leave some art behind.
4. Know as much art history as you can.
5. Let art teach you about your human self.
