We are taught to respect and obey the law. But we are not always taught to ask the law to be fair or just. The law is not moral, although it deals with moral issues (Thou shalt not kill. Thou shall not steal.) This is why a higher law is often invoked by some.
The law is a human construct with some admirable intents, among them justice. But the law fails and justice is mocked when it is made by those who have self-interest and power as their driving concerns.
The fundamental question is what kind of system laws produces a culture which must have its arm twisted to treat the disabled, the poor, minorities, women equally. Or to allow such an inequitable distribution of wealth. Or to protect the powerful. Or to allow such poverty.
