In truth, professional athletes are not essential in the way that teachers, police officers, nurses, plumbers and many other professionals are. Yet we pour money into the pockets of these athletes while teachers, police officers and nurses are underpaid and leaving their professions in record numbers. The entertainment value of professional sports continues to be more important to people than fair wages and good working conditions for essential workers.
If all professional sports disappeared tomorrow, I’d still need my plumber.
