Marketing love

I believe in love, as most of us do. But I look around the world and wonder if it has failed us. If Jesus, Martin Luther King, Ghandi and the Dalai Lama haven’t convinced us to embrace and work hard at love, then our only hope now is the machinery of mass marketing. It can sell us anything and make any want into a need. So why not turn it loose on love. Let’s dump the sex-as-love spiel, the pop song versions of adolescent love and the McDonald’s and Suburu versions of love and get at the real, responsible adult versions. Let’s get celebrities to stop trying to sell us shoes, watches, coffee makers and toe fungus medications and start selling us the real thing. We’ll start to want love because we know we need. Let’s just do it.
