Generally, serious visual art is not of much interest to the American general public. Our educational institutions do little to teach the visual language--in a world that is extremely visual. The news media rarely cover stories about significant artists, art exhibits or other visual art events. Artists are not widely known by their work. Artists can and do make art whose intended audience is not the general public.
What of this needs changing and who needs to change it?
