symbols

For millenia human beings have used symbols, rituals and stories to make sense of their place in the universe.

Sadly today, too often, the symbols we live by are corporate logos, the rituals we experience are professional sports competitions and rock concerts, the stories we most experience are in commercials and the Hallmark Channel.

President

The President of the United States must have integrity.

That counts Trump out.
The President of the United States must defend the Constitution.
Trump has already shown he won’t.
The President of the United States must perform well on the world stage.
Trump loves dictators.
The wife of the President of the United States must be visible and compassionate.
Melania is always on the runway.
The President of the United States should think of the American people first.
Trump is all about himself.

Marvel

We marvel at the beauty and diversity of the natural world—in flowers, birds, animals, trees, all of it. Strangely, in our own human species and our own human diversity, we far from this marvel. Fear, ignorance and privilege keep us from marveling at the diversity of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, body type, language and more.

Full humanity

If we assume that war, brutality, murder, hunger and exploiting of others is innate to the human condition, then we must assume that as humans we have failed to our full humanity. The glory of our art, science and technology is no excuse.

There have been a small number of individuals who have tapped their spiritual selves to give us the means to become full human beings. We respond by crucifying them, assassinating them, ignoring them.

Evolution

We can’t hang onto the outdated notion that the earth is God’s gift to humankind to use for our purposes. The world doesn’t belong to us alone. It belongs to the cockroaches, bats, spiders, bacteria, kangaroos, trees, flowers, beetles and flamingos—all the beautiful and peculiar creations of evolution. In the end, greed, convenience, ignorance and stubbornness will be no match for evolution.

Mystery

Mystery is at the core of the universe.

Mystery is at the core of life.
Mystery is at your core.
Those who try to unravel these mysteries will never succeed, but their curiosity and effort will open the world to them.

Measure

It took a long time for me to own my strangeness.

To honestly dissect my character into its yin and yang.

To see why love is so essential.

To be grateful and graceful.

To take measure of myself.

Love

To love requires the will to love.
